THE
OHIO HOUSING AUTHORITIES CONFERENCE (OHAC) is
a statewide trade association of Ohio’s 75 Public Housing Authorities.
Housing Authorities are political sub-divisions of the State of Ohio
organized to administer Federal funds received from Housing and Urban
Development through annual contracts and other housing initiatives.
OHAC’s
mission is to foster and promote affordable housing in the state of
Ohio through:
1. Education
and training of its membership and publics
2. Exchange of information and concerns
3. Mutual support
4. Collaborative efforts
The Ohio Housing
Authorities Conference has a long history of professional service to
the affordable housing industry. Strong leadership and advocacy among
OHAC members has been a real catalyst for quality, affordable housing
throughout the cities, towns and villages of Ohio. The housing authorities
assist participants in developing the skills and self-confidence needed
to become self sufficient. Some housing authorities assist families
with additional needs including: child care, education, transportation,
job training, credit counseling, utility assistance and other needed
services.135,651 Ohio families are provided housing assistance through
a variety of programs. These programs include: Conventional
Public Housing Units and Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers.
CONVENTIONAL
PUBLIC HOUSING UNITS
50,106 units statewide with approximately 125,000 residents served. The
Public Housing Program provides rental assistance to low and moderate-income
families and individuals. The Housing authority owns and manages all
rental units offered under this program. Eligibility is based upon the
individual’s income and family size. Units can range from one
bedroom efficiencies, to multi-bedroom single family homes.

8 HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM
85,545 units statewide with approximately 214,476 residents served.
The Section 8 Voucher
Program provides rental assistance to qualified families to subsidize
rents in the private market place. These tenant-based vouchers provide
low-income families with affordable housing choices.Families with a
tenant-based voucher are able to choose from a variety of safe, well
maintained, affordable, privately owned rental units. Homeownership
opportunities are also available with this program. The amount of the
vouchers can vary depending upon the resident’s income, family
size and location of the private housing.
The total average tenant
payment is
$200 a month, with an average Housing Assistance Payment of $409 per
month. Approximately $34 Million per month from the Public Housing Authorities
makes its way into Ohio’s rental market.
